i say that and then today it's back to two short naps..but nighttime sleep is good no matter what. she's a little inconsistant.

Hayden is inconsistent with her sleep as well. the kids that I baby-sit will all sleep for like 3 hours and she sleep for 1. I think that has something to do with breastmilk absorbing into their little bodies faster than formula so they need to eat more often. she only wakes up about twice at night as well though...yeah!

ayn..you're back again! yippie!
1) yes yes..breastmilk has FAR fewer calories than formula, so they eat more frequently and don't get the food coma sleep...oh well. my friend had the formula fed, cereal in the bottle baby..and here i was with ms. sleep no more. but it's worth it, right?

2) the whole no cry it out thing pretty much guarantees that it will take much much longer for them to learn to sleep. we've started getting her sleepy, laying her down (angry), coming back patting her back, leaving...it's working pretty well.

you took the leap! i never pumped much, but if i had it to do over again, i would pump. i guess i would have to know if you're working to tell you how much you'll be pumping. if you're staying home, you'll only be pumping for outings, and for eric to feed her. back when i pumped, i printed out a little sheet with milk storage guidelines and put it on the fridge. as far as the formula and nursing combo: if it is so eric can feed her, he can just use expressed milk. if it is from a convenience standpoint, it is certainly feasible, but i wouldn't introduce formula for the first 5 or 6 weeks if possible. it's really vital to establish a good milk supply, and it is established purely on supply and demand. i won't drown you in information here, but please if you have ANY questions, i'd be more than happy to answer them now, or as issues arise. feel free to email me. nothing was more valuable to me than guidance from other nursing mothers. if you'd like some basic info, i like kellymom as far as i remember it was less fruity than some other sites, but still had really good information. what i would say is this: do not expect this to come naturally. we all think...i'm a mother, i should know how to do this. it, like everything, takes practice. soon it will be second nature.

Herbs? We are having some oscillating sleeping issues with our little one (8 hrs one night / 5 hrs the next).

Will these herbs help?

possibly. i don't know how old your little person is though. i started to take herbs to curb some postpartum craziness. they helped me tremendously, and it seems they also calmed violet. (who is a bit on the high strung side) i don't know if she was better because i was calmer, or if the herbs helped her. i seem to remember you saying your wife nursed, so if so the baby could get the herbs via milk. here's my regimine: motherwort (tastes like liquid death) 3X, skullcap 2 pills 2X, valerian 3 before bed. we did everything we could to get her to sleep. hops pillows, aromatherapy baths, lavender, sweet orange oil. i finally started giving her an herb cocktail called "valerian super calm" for kids. the minimum dosage age is 1 year, so i cut that in half. one way or another, she has GREATLY improved...although i would take 8 hours OR 5 hours!
