to vegan or not to vegan

the flowerchild has been primarily vegan (besides breastmilk). she obviously isn't having cow's milk since she's only 9 1/2 months old, but she has had a little goat's milk yogurt. since she is superlatively wee, i've been trying to sneak extra calories in her diet. i put coconut oil in her dinner, and add cereal to veggies. that sort of thing. i decided to try to introduce egg yolk. some guidelines indicate 8 months for introduction, some 10. i figured she was right in the middle. the child wasn't through 5 bites before she got hives all over her torso. eek! i've never had a hive in my life. and conor, as he likes to remind me, had never had a hive until he met me. (me being a source of stress.) i obviously ceased to feed her egg, and they went away in under 20 minutes. i'm just wondering if this is indicative of an allergy to egg, or just that she wasn't metabolically prepared. i don't feel like trying again in a couple months to see though.

I'm going to guess that we could try again in a couple of months. I'm sure she'll be fine. BTW - what happened to your sidebar?

GIllibean is pretty much vegan besides the occasional mac and cheese and yogurt. But, no reaction thus far. I don't think she'll stay vegan (we aren't) but she'll probably stay veggie until she's old enough to decide for herself.

We tried beebabe on eggs around right at the 9 month mark and had a slight reaction (raised rash, similar to the infamous washing powder switch reaction). Tried again last week with success. Perhaps it's all in the timing.

birdy-i don't know. my sidebar looks fine to me

cbt-that's pretty much our plan. i'm having a REALLY hard time eating fish, so i think i may just give up and keep taking omega3 pills. so we may be back to regular old veggie around here, we'll see.

chiro-thanks! that's good to know. i have ZERO food allergies, and conor pretty much just has seasonal allergies, so i didn't really expect it from her.

DO you guys hard boil these eggs or like a gooey yolk, like over medium eggs. Color me ignorant, but I'm thinking Gillian might like egg. So I'd like to know.

Oh boy, that must have been scary!
I'm so afraid of Gill being allergic to things. That and choking oddly enough are big scary thoughts for me. I haven't tried to give her eggs yet though because I don't know how to give it to her. Good luck with trying again!

CBT - we've done it two ways...hardboiled, which she liked well enough, and then just scrambled the yolks, which she really liked. She is an odd duck, though as she seems to really like having blueberries smashed into the eggs (her doings, not mine).

i just separated the yolk and white, and cook the white in a skillet until it is very done. i think no egg whites until at least a year is what i've read.

Thanks, I'll try this when Gillibean and I have "daddy daughter day."

Sounds good, thanks for the advice, sv, I'd be happy to let jacob try it out.
